Are energy companies passing the cost of renewables to consumers?

Renewable energy has been marketed as a “free” energy source. While that may be true, harvesting, efficiency, and the overall application make wind and solar far from free.

Ameren customers have already received several fees added to their energy bills this year. Some of the reasoning includes;

  • “Collects money from customers and provides it to the Illinois Power Agency to purchase renewable energy credits for clean energy projects.”

  • “Collects money from customers and sends it to the state of Illinois to pay for programs such as workforce and contractor development, investments and community support, and administration of energy and justice efforts.”

  • “Collects money from customers to help fund the conversion of shuttered coal plants to solar energy or energy storage facilities.”

While the second wave of energy cost increases are effective June 1, Ameren customers using 1,000 kWh will pay $50 a month, or $600 more a year.
